Project Information

I made an order for several rare earth magnets [from KJ Magnetics] in the one hundred pound pull range for use in securing switch boxes, mounted on ten foot cords, to my dust collectors. I had one left over,a 2×6 laying around and was inspired by a friend's conversation about metal detecting for riches (old coins, meteorites, etc.) to fashion a walking stick along the design of the foraging stick I'd built for my ex and posted a while back.

As much as anything, it was intended to be for entertainment purposes, while still being functional. For that reason, I set the magnet back from the walking point, but not so much it couldn't be used to test the magnetic property of that eighty pound meteorite.

Anyway, this is what I got for my goofing off. Note that it is unsupported on my table saw. Though the stick is at approximately sixty degrees, the magnet is strong enough to support it in that position (thanks K&J Magnetics).

Great design, and great idea to combine the magnet and walking stick. Might have to try that on one of my walking sticks. Too bad gold and silver and copper are not magnetic - a stick like that would come in REAL handy. :)

Thanks for sharing, (I like those other sticks also).

Neat. Grab a metal detector and you are good to go.
