VOYAGE TO THE SOULS OF 20 TREES

470W x 890L x 430H

A coffee table in various woods and glass.

I am greatly inspired by the work of Po Shun Leong, a contemporary Japanese woodworker with an architectural background. Through this table I continue to explore this inspiration. 20 different species of timber were used in building this piece. I find the fact that I can employ mostly "waste" wood very appealing. Here is the list in no particular order: Cape Blackwood, Australian Blackwood, Maple, Tiama, Wenge, White Pear, African Rosewood, Yellowwood, White Oak, African mahogany, Philippine mahogany, Imbuia, Candlewood, Zim Teak, Assegai, Pine, Brown Maple, Stinkwood, Ironwood and Forest Elder!

PS. A big fat South African "Howzit!" to all my LJ buddies! Thanks for looking and as always I welcome all comments and critique.

At first I wasn't sure what it was, until the 2nd photos, Great piece of work, it is as much a piece of art as it is a bit of woodworking.

Wonderful art piece/furniture Div. The first thought I had when I saw it was Noah's ark, but with wood instead of animals to be saved.

Thanks Joey and Mike. If nothing else, it was indeed a good way to save wood; most of what was used would have ended in the fire!

Hi Div. Now that's an interesting piece that could take me away on may adventures just by concentrating on it from different viewing angles. I like the energy of it. Really unique.

What an incredible blending of texture/color/movement….!
This is a 'conversation piece' that would render most speakers completely silent… well, except for whispered wows…

Thanks for sharing your talent.

Hi Div, this project has taken my breath away, you are a true artist. I have looked at the pictures so many times and every time I see something new. In my mind you didn't plan that table as you worked so something came to mind and your hands got busy. Your work never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks for sharing such an extraordinary project Div.

I noticed Po Shun Leong here in a Gallery in Oak Park, IL about 15 years ago. His sculptural jewelry boxes just astounded me and was one of those "I must do woodworking" moments. Great homage to his style… though your table though holds it's own. Any secret compartments? :)

Hey Div, It has been almost a year since I heard from you, (or I have written) I am ashamed. You have not made a comment on LJs in about the same time. Are you OK? It probably sounds trite but I think of you and your family often. {As recent as today} I noticed I apparently did not make a comment about this piece. How creative. My work is so mundane by comparison. I'll be in touch by other means.
