VOYAGE TO THE SOULS OF 20 TREES

470W x 890L x 430H

A coffee table in various woods and glass.

I am greatly inspired by the work of Po Shun Leong, a contemporary Japanese woodworker with an architectural background. Through this table I continue to explore this inspiration. 20 different species of timber were used in building this piece. I find the fact that I can employ mostly "waste" wood very appealing. Here is the list in no particular order: Cape Blackwood, Australian Blackwood, Maple, Tiama, Wenge, White Pear, African Rosewood, Yellowwood, White Oak, African mahogany, Philippine mahogany, Imbuia, Candlewood, Zim Teak, Assegai, Pine, Brown Maple, Stinkwood, Ironwood and Forest Elder!

PS. A big fat South African "Howzit!" to all my LJ buddies! Thanks for looking and as always I welcome all comments and critique.

Impressive! A bold step to tackle a project like this - at least it would be for me. Your interpretation of the style is great!

Hi Div, This is absolutely wonderful. I love the way you incorporated a piece of art into something as functional as a coffee table… Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.

WoW! That is so cool. Simple yet complex. I bet it's heavy. I'd have to study it over closely for a while to even begin to figure out how I feel about. That is certainly a conversation piece. Well Done!

Woooouuuu,
I think of a old wooden battle ship, music instrument and a architectual model of a city, all mixed in some wonderful wood and closed by a glass lid.
I really like it.
To make something this complex and make it look so easy, that is impressive.
Best thoughts,
Mads

Way off the wall and outside the box. I really like it but I wouldn't want to have to dust it.
Great creativity my friend.

Great work. I could look at it for days on end, but I could never think up something as exquisite as this.

My thoughts are of instruments too. I think I can hear it playing.

If I tried to pull that off, it would look like xxxx. But you sir, you got skills.
That is really nice. I want to see it in person.

Before I saw that you are inspired by Po Shun Leong, i thought your stuff looked familiar. If you are trying to emulate Po, you are doing a great job. Nice work.

It has alot of energy. Great detail . Good focus . My eye see's alittle to much sort of like you can not see the sun because of the twenty trees are in the way. Very interesting though. I used to build scrap tables when I first started . I realized it was like fitting a square peg into a round hole just because you have it doesn't mean you have to use it. Compositions are a flow. A blend as scotch makers say. An intersection of art and nature is not a collision it is a merging of energy. I hope that will help you . Good luck.

Mafe and I had the same thought: it wants us to think of music, sailing, architecture, mechanical movements, timbers, and of course, woodworking. All at once! A remarkable piece, both in design and execution. Congrats!

I too am a fan of Po Shun Leong, but have never tried to emulate his work.
You have done a great job starting from Leong and, in the process, created
something more in your own style. Beautifully made with great detail and
excellent craftsmanship.

Thanks for the inspiration to us those bits-o-wood for something other than smoking meat. I like it as a conversation piece it would do well to start one.
