Project Information

This bass took me the better part of a year to finish. It has hard maple sides ,neck and back, the top is western red cedar. I built forms and steam bent the sides. the tuner head scroll is all hand carved, along with the curved fingerboard. It stands just over 6 feet tall. The guy at the sawmill didn't believe me when i told him what i was going to use the maple for. It sounds good, although I cant play a note, my son can play it but mostly it's just a conversation piece.
Added a few pics of the build but I didn't take very many. Pics are of plywood form, neck, and clamping/gluing .

Man, what a conversation piece.
I am in the learning curve with steam bending and it is not going as easily as I had hoped.
Nicely done…................

Thaat's a good looking "dog house".....I've got a 1956-57 Epiphone that's been in the family for that long…I plyed that bass in a bluegrass band for a couple of years…..It's got that good "woody" sound to it….It'll take yours a good while to get that sound, being it's new, but with a lot of playing, it'll open up….Stellar job on the build, and I know your son is proud to have it…..I would be….

I can,t even imagine the work which went into this project and your talent level. I built a couple dulcimers which stretched my abilities more than I thought it would. Beautiful work. I know you love to hear the sound coming from this wonderful piece. Thanks for the inspirations.

Newer seen anyone build a non-electric bass before. Wow!
Like matthew I would love to see a little of the construction and how you deal with the different parts, bend the sides, carve the head etc.
Thanks for sharing!

I built a guitar once back in the 1970s. I have always wanted to build an upright bass! Fantastic project and it looks like a beauty!

Wow. Nice job, and you REALLY dont play the bass? That's kinda like someone building a hot rod from the ground up yet they dont know how to drive! :)

Gonna TRY to put the link to a video that this reminds me of…

Thanks for the extra photos. Your form looks like you might have used the Charles Hayward Book. I was going to keep my form ….. but you know how it goes.

I put on a bolt on neck on mine. The black bottom is removed and the neck, in a sliding dovetail, is pushed forward.
