Project Information

The girl in the window 28" x 36" recycled honduras mahogany… an untitled work

The second work is "October 29, 1929 6:00 A.M." hope you can see the rationale for the title… if not, drop me a line and after sobbing uncontrollably (not funny) I will explain . the work is 21"x 28"

The third is a 20"x 24" life size Camphor wood book matched crotch butterfly ( oh wait , wait ! that doesn't sound right) maybe I should have said this 20"x 24" butterfly was fashioned of book matched pieces of camphor wood crotch material ( OK, who votes I take the "crotch" out of the description completely !) sheesh oh never mind, the butterfly was not allowed because the site said it exceeded 5MB ?? too bad because this sucker is gorgeous !

OK trying again we should see a mask 9"x20" including horsehair this is one of the Iroquois False Face Society Ceremonial Masks. He is referred to by the less faint of heart, by his name pronounced Haa-Doo-We (don't say it three times). Since it is in Dark Tones according to tradition, this was carved for "Night Time Ceremonies"
The red with brass eyes rendition of the same character is according to tradition a "Day Time Ceremonial Mask" and the last of the False Face Society Masks , the white , is that of the "Healer Breath" mask. used of course in healing ceremonies All of the False Face Society Masks were blessed by a native American Shaman to minimize the possibility of their use for evil should they fall into the hands of the uninitiated or any evil-doers . Truly.

The final mask shown is a combination Aztec representational mask carved of American holly and butternut wood it is 14" x 24" The mask main body is a representation of Tlaloc the rain god and the birds on his head are quetzals wrapped about Tlaloc's head , and making up the eyes and other features of Tlaloc are snakes. When the serpents combine with the quetzal birds we have the representation of the blood thirsty Aztec god Quetzalcoatl.

More great stuff, Don.

Now next time either shoot your work first, or make sure your gallery owner knows how to use a camera. :)

These are all nice and, although I'm not an artist, they seem creative to me and I enjoyed looking at them. My favorite was also the October piece.

Well.. you got me hooked. I spent a lot of time in Art school obsessed with the psychology of initiation rituals of primitive cultures and read everything by Joseph Campbell. Please post more masks, if you don't have any more to post.. make more masks!!!
