Project Information

This is a prototype of a foot rest I made last night - took about an hour.

Something I had been thinking about for a while and it finally hit me yesterday to give it rockers instead of flat feet since I'm constantly shifting my feet around under my desk. I built something similar for my wife years ago when our second child was born to use as a nursing stool ( something she could prop her feet up on when feeding the baby ) but I can't say for sure whatever happened to it - yard sale perhaps.

By the way the second child mentioned above is ten now and he helped me with this. I let him use the router table for the first time to round over the edges of the top. Of course I had my hands on it the whole time guiding it and we always wear the proper safety gear. He hangs out a lot with me in the shop and I always use the opportunity to explain what I'm doing and lecture on safety. I'll make a woodworker out of him yet.

I used an old rocking horse rocker as the template on the rockers. Leftover birch plywood from my toy box project and pocket screws (God Bless you Kreg Jig!!) to assemble. The grooves on top were made with a round-nose router bit. I may eventually put a finish on it but for now it's under my feet being put to good use.

This is a great project as a teaching tool.. and functional

I love the idea of the rocker..
But does is tend to slide a little when under your desk?
I built one a few years ago that I use and is flat on the bottom, but I fidget alot, so I am constantly moving it around under my desk. It needs to rock a little.

Thanks.

No. It really doesn't slide around unless I force it to and the carpet in my office is low pile. That's one of the other reasons I used the rockers - to make it easier to slide if I wanted to move it with my feet. I have really long legs and I'm always moving around.

not bad router work on the plywood. Its an interesting project and seems pretty original. I too would be interested in how it functions, but if you say it work, who am I to disagree? Maybe I'll even try something like this, but I'm more likely to stick with a more traditional set of feet. I like it though.

Building something with your son would be really nice. I have 6 years boy, and I just taught how to cut by a handsaw. It's always nice to do something with him.
Looking forward to seeing your new project, I mean you and your son's.

May I please get one of these? A lady came and took mine. I am sad without one. My legs hurt now.

So, I know that it's been a while since you posted this, but I was wondering roughly what the dimensions were. I made a make-shift standing desk for the office, but I want something like this to put a foot up (think of the rail at the bar). I'm thinking a small stool as low as 6", but maybe as tall as 18". Just not sure where that sweet spot is.

Thanks!

yoseph76 - it has been a while and thanks for looking. I'm thinking it was some where around 8 inches tall??? I refined this even further and made a lower profile of rocker which is only 3 1/2" tall with the top size approximately 12×16.
