Project Information

A friend wanted a twin sized bed frame with storage underneath and a matching bookcase custom designed to fit in a small bedroom. The construction for the bedframe is in four parts: a headboard, footboard, and a frame for six drawers on each side for a total of 12 drawers. The head and footboards are constructed from solid maple with raised panels on the front and maple veneer ply for the side panels. The 3×3 posts hold cleats that mate to the drawer frames. The drawer frames have maple on the outward facing sides and poplar for the inner elements. The drawer frames are fitted with cleats that mate to the head/foot boards to allow the parts to be assembled once in the bedroom. I used full extension ball bearing sliders for the drawers. The bookcase is constructed in a similar manner to the headboard. The finish is five coats of wipe on poly.

Very attractive, well designed and a lot of work. That's a great way to make a lot more storage space in a small room.

That is quite the one of a kind bed and side stand. The bed construction appears to be able to handle any and all jumping and bouncing all the kids can do.

Lots of nice design elements in that set. I like your drawer arrangement.

What is the height of the mattress frame?

The mattress frame is 23 inches from the floor. I tried to talk him into a little lower profile, but he insisted that the drawers had to be 8 inches deep in two rows. With framing and floor clearance it worked out to 23.

Well done. Personally, I would have done one row of 10", but taste is the rule. I have a bed coming up for a guest room and this has me thinking about storage.
