Project Information
SEPT 30, 2020
After getting a bigger TV SWMBO wanted a place to put it. While shopping she saw a table with baskets so thatʻs where this project started.
Although it made it harder I decided to combine oiled walnut and painted wood in this project.
The top was made from walnut veneered plywood with 1 inch solid walnut edging and finished with Watco Danish Oil.
Instead of making solid sides I decided to make painted framed paneled sides with bead panel inserts between 2 inch X 2 inch walnut legs. The bead panels and walnut legs were stained with Watco Danish Oil.
Since we have a computer attached to our TV I included shelves that slide out upon which the computer, keyboard and mouse reside. They were made with walnut veneered plywood with solid walnut edges and finished with Watco Danish Oil. Full extension drawer guides were mounted on the bottom of each shelf although it is not a typical mounting of these drawer guides.
A core box router bit was used to make a finger pull on the edge of each shelf.
To make the legs interesting I decided to make a "foot" on the lower 3 inches of the outside faces each leg.
CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
Assembling this monster was a real challenge. Sorry I didnʻt take any photos of this process.
The end panels were assembled and painted and stained.
The legs were shaped and oiled finished.
The legs and panels were then glued together.
The construction of the shelves and dividers were also a challenge. To make finishing easier the shelves and dividers were painted before assembly except those areas that were to be glued together.
The shelves were constructed of 3/4 inch plywood with a 1-1/4 inch wide plywood strip glued to the front and back of each shelf. A 1-1/2 inch wide piece of hardwood was glued to the front and back edges of each shelf.
Shelf deviders were made of 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood with hardwood glued to the front and back edges.
The bottoms of each divider was screwed to the shelf that it sat on.
The top of each divider has 2 dowels that fit into 3/8 inch deep holes on the bottom of the the shelf above it.
Due to limited space after assembly the drawer guides were attached to both the bottom of the sliding shelf and the top of the top shelf.
After all the dividers were attached to each shelf with screws, the 3 shelf assemblies were glued together.
After the glue set the end panel and leg assemblies were glued to the shelf assembly. The end of each shelf had a 1/4 inch tenon that fit into a 1/4 inch deep mortise that was cut into the inside of each panel.
The final step was to attach the top to the assembly with figure 8 table top fasteners at the top of each leg.
The final step was to insert 6 baskets just like the one SWMBO saw in the store.
The approximate dimensions of the table are 50 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 35 inches high. The total weight is approximately 116 pounds.
I hope you enjoyed this project.
Comments and questions welcomed.
Thanks for looking.
