Project Information

This is a vase I made on my lathe. The body of the vase is made of mesquite and epoxy resin with a coffee ground filler in the resin. The top rim is mahogany with an accent stripe below that of hard maple. The vase is 11" in height and 9 1/2" in diameter. The wall thickness is approximately 1/3". The limb slices are also mesquite ranging in size from 5/8" to 1 1/8".

Welcome to lumberjocks.
A very unique vase you have turned.
Would you care to share the type/brand of epoxy you used?

Actually it is Bondo fiberglass resin purchased at Walmart in the automotive dept. I mixed it in 2 oz batches with 1 oz coffee grounds right out of the can. Be sure to use the proper amount of catylist.

I will have to give this a try sometime.
Thanks for the resin info.

Hi Duane, I like this vase. Very nice. Did you use a filler for the center, rather than cutting through all that epoxy?

I would love to get some mesquite. It is very difficult to obtain in Canada.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice technique. I will have to give the coffee ground trick a try on my next project… a coffee table no less.

Never used a lathe yet, so I can't comment on technique, but your vase caught my eye because it's so striking.
Nicely done.

That's a beautiful vase, but I can't "wrap my head' around the technique used for the epoxy and limb slices.
Very creative indeed!

I like this very much and the idea of forming shapes like this using resin, making a mosaic of sorts gives me some ideas. Just wait until I share this with my artist wife. Thanks for posting.

Can you be any more specific on the resin you used?

The resin used is simply Fiberglas resin (brand name Bondo) available at auto stores, even at Walmart. I mix according to directions on the can. I then stir in coffee grounds about 1 part grounds to 2 parts resin by volume.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful piece. I will have to give this a try. Curious if any dyes would work with the resin?

I am not sure about coloring.. You would just have to experiment. Let me know whatever works.
