Project Information

This plate is turned out of Tulip Poplar beaded on both sides. Then the radial lines are drawn. After the plate comes off the lathe, the radial lines are burned into the wood. I use water based special markers and then finish with a spray finish.
The other side of the plate has the same design but in another color.

Barbara,

That shows an incredible amount of patience and skill. You must have good eye sight and a very steady hand to do such tiny detail. We'd love to see more photos (opposite side). Thanks for posting.

Wow, that is phenomenal! It looks to be woven out of fiber, not made out of wood!

This would make an excellent blog series, if you'd be willing to share the process with us.

Thanks guys. Jonathan, I certainly do not mind sharing the process. Someone shared with me when I was interested in making the plates. I will have to go back and check on the suppliers.

Very beautiful piece, I know how much time and skill it takes to produce a plate like this. Your design is great and color is excellent. The wood burning is real time consuming project, congradulations on a terrific plate.

Very nice piece, Barbara. I always thought that if I went back into wood turning (read 'afford a lathe'), I would explore that David Nittmann style of making wood look like a basket. One thing though… if you use a water based marker (and they must be really small?), does that raise the wood grain? Welcome to LJ.
