This latest went to a Naval Pilot from Texas who has been deployed for almost a year, and will come home to this guitar on December 20th, 2011.
Front is redheart with peruvian walnut stripes, back is just the opposite.
The pickguard is 3MM thick outdoor aged white oak. This is where the oak is allowed to sit out in the weather for about 4-5 years, turn completely gray, and then just harvest about 3/8" of the aged surface on the table saw. Usually in 4X4 form, I have to take enough off the 4X4 sides to glue up, then plane down the un-aged side to 3MM. Sometimes it explodes in the planer with the aging. And I'm using a spiralhead cutter! My old lunchbox would destroy them. This was the second try. It is inlaid into the top of the guitar, screwed down over the large, tonal chamber. Once in, it is rather sturdy. The pickups then act like they are in a soundhole in an acoustic. Tons of sustain.
The pickups are overwound Duncans, 14K at the bridge, 10K at the neck. Grover tuners, Tsunami wave headstock, redheart truss rod cover. 500K Alpha pots, Orange Drop 300Volt capacitors. Played like a dream, with almost too much sustain! Had to lower the bridge pickup to stop sympathetic string vibration.

On the bench now…my first 12 string, with a quilted walnut back, various American woods on the front, with a raised walnut pickguard. My first guitar with a genuine German curve around the edge. Vintage 12 string neck with binding, TAM bridge, trapeze tailpiece.
