Project Information

I made this with the kerfmaker I posted earlier.
Made with scraps of white oak a friend had given me.
It took me a little bit to figure out how to use the kerfmaker for something useful and be able to locate the kerfs where I wanted them. But I finally figured it out using my Incra miter gauge and the saw fence.
I milled up the slats to the size that I wanted and then taped them all together in one bundle, I laid out the locations for the kerfs and cut the 1/2 lap joints all at the same time. The thing went together perfectly on the first try.
I used the router table with an 1/8" round over bit to knock off the corners and a little light sanding.
Finished with shellac.
The kerfmaker is an amazing tool. I got perfect joints the first try and every try.
Build or buy one, you can't believe how bad you need one of these until you have used one.

I'm a little dense here. Is there a photo of the kerfmaker disassembled to components and also actually on the tablesaw? Trying to figure out exactly how it works. Need to make one, too.

You can also cut the kerfs first out of one wide stock before milling the slats out. Then you know they will all line up.

I got to tell you that I was unaware of such an animal…... So I did a google search and a kerf maker is quite the gadget. Looks like yours is right on the money too. I have made lots of eggcrate inserts for Jewelery boxes and such and this looks like it would really simplify this type of work. I think I will try my hand at making one.

Thanks for sharing

I had made several kerfmakers when they were all the rage and honestly had forgotten about them until I saw this post. Yours is a particularly elegant model. Thanks for reminding us about this useful jig.
