I saw this design and decided to give it a try; I glued up some scrap wood and turned it. The finished shape looked good so I stained it and covered it with three coats of polyurethane varnish. I plan to try turning one in purpleheart but have not found the time yet. Notice how the shape continues into the finial on the lid.
