Project Information

This is a traveling plate rack made from oak for wet plate photography. After the plate is fixed, it needs a place to dry before a protective varnish coating. During this drying process the silver coating is very delicate.

Version one of this holder was mostly a prototype and I learned a few things during the build. First, I didn't like that the holder didn't completely collapse flat. Also, while the square grooves work fine, I have since updated the project to have these grooves cut by a V-Groove bit.

Future versions will also have brass hardware and a rear stop to keep the holder from opening too wide. Right now with Quarter Sized plates (3.25×4.25") there isn't enough weight to overcome the angled feet.

Nice Darkbox Brian! I'm on version two of mine and will put it up when it's completed. Will you be adding a safelight to the dark box you're creating? I use Ruby Glass in mine, easy to get cut to size at any stained glass shop. My first darkbox safelight was too small, I still had to use a headlamp and when I'm doing living history and reenacting it's not too authentic. Version two has a 4×6" sliding ruby safelight.

Will you be painting the inside? Yellow works really well - it reflects light and gives it a warmer tone because darker yellow into red doesn't fog the process. Spar Urethane helps with silver spills!

Brian, I have placed the photos from my own darkbox version one in the projects part if you wanted to take a look. I love looking at other darkboxes, never know when you'll see a technique you want to borrow for your next one!

Let's see if I can just post a link here.. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/89436
