Project Information

Here is another GoodWill "Re-Build"

Spalted Maple Travel Mug. 8 piece Staved construction. Started with one of those travel mugs that have a stainless steel lower section with the plastic inside and bottom. Removed the bottom and trimmed. Removed the stainless and replaced with the Maple.

Glued back together with GORILLA GLUE that I won on the "Nothing New But Glue" contest. Thanks Again Martin and Gorilla Glue for the contest.

Finished the wood with 4 coats Tung Oil/Varnish. Then Buffed on the Beall Buffing system.

I really enjoy re-building things found at yard sales or GoodWill type places. It gives them a new life and costs a LOT less then buying the "kits" does.

cool idea i think we have 1 or 2 of those around the house we are not using good idea to reuse stuff to give it new life

fantastic wood you have found there :)
and thank´s for the idea of rebuild old things you don´t use or just want to improve with wood
........hmmm I think I have two or three in pure platic I think they need a facelift with a file…..lol

may I surgest
the next one you shuold make with a weiter footpiece ,
this one is tall and slim and can easely tip over if you ain´t carefull

I used the original foot from the cup. That is why it is so small. Still fits in a cup holder in the car. Just for info.

yaae that crossed my mind
but I think it wood realy bee a wast of good coffee
not to mention the time to dry/clean after the accident

still a beautyfull mug cop you have

Very nice job! I really like the spalted maple you chose. It finished up very nicely as well. If I were looking at the mug upside down, what would the bottom be made of? I'm just curious since you said that it was stave type construction. I've got one of those stainless kits that I've never got around to yet-LOL. Congratulations again on an excellent project.

Ken,
The bottom is just a plastic cup, that was on the bottom of the original cup. I cut it shorter, then cut a step into he bottom of the staves for it to inset into. Hope that explains it better for you.

Looks good. The spalting hides the joints between the staves pretty well.

Hey Scappy looks great. Those kits that you buy to save money not paying for a cup you have to really think about that one. Your way is the way to go

I am glad you agree that re-using is better then new! I have always been thrifty (cheap) and like to save money where ever I can. This cost a lot less then buying a "KIT" from one of the supply places.Glad I could give others an idea.

Is there any end to this mans imagination great idea great wood choice. Hey Scrappy have you ever thought of keeping the wood handles & replacing the metal parts of your wifes pans with some nice exotic wood? lol
You'd definitely get that authentic smokey flavour
