Project Information

Here in California there arn't many houses with a full basement. The older houses sometimes have one. My friend has as house that had a floor furnace that she never used and the size lent itself for a trap door. We took out the floor furnace, I made a ladder for her and finished out the opening to 15×26. The door mimics the existing floor and I epoxied the oak to 5/8 mdf. Had to strong back the thing with some heavy iron channel for support and to remove the warpage. The door has a flush ring pull in the top side and a handle on the bottom side.

Great solution, I always like it when people are able to come up with a very usable result with low cost.
Thanks for sharing.

Great idea, just as long as no one moves the couch over the door when they are down there ;^)

Nice job - I suspect that more than one of us Lumberjocks would have a tough time climbing down to the basement (fitting through the opening ) :))

Oh, and your friend is a very Lovely Lady.

Yes, that is a good idea for the opening in the floor, I thought about making a trap door for the crawlspace at my house, instead of going outside and removing the outside cover for the crawlspace entry hole in the foundation outside.

Awesomely done. What are the specs on the ladder? (wood type, thickness of boards, width)

But how do you get your projects up through that tiny hole? Cool idea, just make sure everyone knows when you're going down there, or you'll need to keep it closed…......crash!

Is that the only way in? It seems there are lot of items down there to be brought in by the trap door. Nice job.

to cajunpen-It really isn't to bad to climb thru. We had the ladder facing the other way and ones butt was a real hang up. When you go up the narrow space ones arms go up first and the rest follows. Thanks for the comment.

to nebulous-The ladder was made from 4 2×4's 8 feet long. Clear douglas fir was the wood. I did trim the parts to about 3" wide. The angle of the steps is 8 degrees and I cut them using a Forrest Dado King dado set in my ra saw. The treads are 12" apart similar to a regular ladder and I used Deft as the finish. The net width of the ladder is 18" and finally I put non slim tape on the treads. Thanks for the comment

to Bradford and Jayp413-The ladder you see is in my garage shop not in her basement, sorry bout that. She now has an alternate way to her basement rather than going outside and down some very trecherous steps to get to it. Thanks for the comments

Great idea, I'd never get my fat *&% through that hole. We wood workers are a creative bunch. Wonderful job on the floor.

to Junior Joiner-good observation, but when the door is opened it leans against the wall at a pretty good angle and I told her to warn the many who will be traveling below to be carefull of the door. Thanks for the comment
