Project Information

Well i gained a new title a few weeks ago, uncle, so i figured my first niece needed something to put all her stuff in. I liked the design for this blanket chest i found in one of Norm's books so i started on this just after Christmas. Well she decided to make her debut 3 weeks early so i didn't have it finished when she was born(dang kids never on time HAHA). This was my first attempt at tongue and groove joinery and making breadboard ends. I though it turned out well. The frames are cherry and i used maple plywood for the panels. I've never done much with contrasting woods but i really like how these complement each other. Since i took the pictures i have added spring lids supports so no one gets their fingers smashed. A few things i regret are some of the gaps in the joints and i got on of the end panels turned the wrong way. Next time I'll have to pay more attention when i assemble. Thanks for looking.

That's a really nice chest. One thing though…all woodworkers make mistakes, they just don't point them out.

That is a really nice chest. Totally understand on the "mistakes" but everyone else thinks it is great and you are the only one who will every notice.

Nice chest, looks great. I have been looking for some ideas for a toy chest for my daughter due to arrive in 5 weeks here, thanks for sharing! Some good inspiration here to try some T&G myself.

Looks great and if it helps, I have learned a lot more from my mistakes than I have from my successes.

Aw geezz, ya know when that little gal is about 3, she's going to look at you and say " hey you knothead why'd ya put that panel in backwards??
I flipped an end panel on an Oak Hope/Blanket chest years ago … well that gal is now married with her first little one … no one has ever noticed but me.
And let me tell ya … That chest looks pretty darned nice from over here, and I think you did a right fine job on it.
