Project Information

This chest was made for a couple's firstborn baby boy. They are doing a pirate theme in his room and wanted a toy chest that looks like an old pirate treasure chest. The body is made from pine shelving boards, knots, cracks, splits, and all. "The more rustic, the better." they said. To simulate the leather straps, I used 1/4 inch plywood with a straight grain. I colored it with a red oak stain. The handles are 5/8 natural rope. I couldn't find a latch I liked, and since their son is here now, I gave it to them and told them I would install one on it if they found one they liked. It measure roughly 3×2x2.

Great chest, I also like building them too. I am with you, I have a hard time finding latches and handles which fits into the design of my chests. I see you are using those safety spriings on the inside of the lid. I've tried them before and they didn't work for me. Maybe I installed them incorrectly. But a reall nice project with the simulated leather straps.

Look forward in your future projects.

Thanks for the comments.
Gshepherd, I don't think they realized how big it was going to be. My wife asked them what size they wanted and they didn't know, so they came up with 2×3. He is a first child so it will probably get full soon.
Richard, I'm not crazy about the safety springs. They don't really keep it from coming down fast. I discovered torsion hinges from another project here, but they are not cheap.
