Project Information
Even though my wood-shop has no heater, and it's certainly cold enough to freeze mass amounts of water outside now, I just HAD to get out and do something in the shop. Something, anything. So I bundled up warm, and headed out to work in the cold. I sorted through the scrap bin for a length of 2":x4" and a scrap piece of 1"x5". I scribbled out a rough shape on the 2"x4" and fed it to the band saw, then to a drill press, and then to the bench sander.
I chucked up a 2.5" hole-saw bit into the drill press and then grabbed that 1"x5." A few minutes later I had a dozen wheels punched out of that old scrap 1"x5" board.
The car's body was punched out for a 3/8" dowel axle. That meant my hole-saw's 1/4 center holes had to be reamed out a smidge. So each wheel had to visit the drill press once more with a 3/8" bit. I rough sanded all parts to 150 grit. The wheels and axles are so snug, that I had to use a mallet to put em together. NO glue. I'm not sure they even need it. But then again, the parts were ice cold, and have yet to acclimate. Future versions might need glue up…. maybe. I kinda like doing things with no glue if I can help it.
This was pretty much just a rough prototype / concept project. I wanted to see how long it would take me to get it done, and more importantly, if the end results were worth the effort. Would the toy get rave review.. or would it end up back in the scrap bin? I set the car down on the kitchen table… and it promptly disappeared. Suppose I need to make a few more eh?
