Project Information
This was my build for the 2014 Woodworkers Fighting Cancer charity build sponsored by "The Wood Whisperer" and Woodworking For Mere Mortals. I decided to build it for my niece's baby boy.
I built this out of select pine from Lowes and birch plywood from Home Depot. The front and back panels are whiteboard on which the kids can draw. The top is covered in Lego base plates for their creative endeavors. On each end there is a side compartment for books and magazines. To attach the lid, I used a 30" piano hinge as well as two lid supports to hold the lid open and, more importantly, allow the lid to close slowly. The front and side edges of the box opening each have been contoured to leave a small gap between the lid and base when closed. Hopefully this will also protect little fingers from getting pinched as it closes. I finished the toy box with a dark walnut stain and then topped with several layers of polyurethane for protection from years of abuse.
