Project Information

Instead of buying the grinding jig (http://tinyurl.com/5wveqxz) for my Veritas tool rest (http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=32973&cat=1,43072,45938), I made a simple sharpening guide block for it.

I reground the bevel angle for one of my blades from 25 to 33 degrees on the grinder (80x Grade H wheel) and then honed the edge on the diamond stones and leather strop freehand. The hollow grind made the freehand sharpening easy and quick.

The result was a razor sharp edge, all done within 10 minutes. To do this with water stones, you'd be looking at an hour and more. Using this method, the regular honing should take less than five minutes.
