Project Information

Just a quick fun project for a gun nut friend at work.
.
Kit is the bolt-action ensemble from Penn State. Pretty solid quality kit.
.
Equipment is your standard JET with a Nova and morse drill chuck. Sorby HSS tools. Planning carbide.
.
Wood is stabilized tinted elm burl from I can't remember where. Go to OregonBurls, baby.
.
Finish is sand to 3000 grit, 1/2lb amber shellac wash, and black BriWax.
.
I never let the lathe stop turning from rough to done. It's like Xmas with burls; never know:)
.
Thanks for looking!
.
I'm making a kaleidoscope (sp?) next. If a say it here, I'll have to get my a$$ in the shop and do it;)

Well throw some pics up and we can all see where you are at, and maybe light a small fire?

Yeah, love that burl!
The pen does look heavy…a pocket weapon!
Nice job, Al.

A very nice bolt-action pen. The burl really looks good. These kits are "heavy", but, at the same time, they feel gr8 in your hand.

Yeah, guys; it's VERY heavy. The stabilized stuff is pretty heavy on its own. Although I don't particularly like the aesthetics of the swell on the body, it helps balance it a bit. I made another one out of straight ebony (I'm keeping it) and it's better balanced. Like another ebony pen I've made, it just looks kind of boring; like a Mont Blanc or something. I like the burls for a little flash. No one spots a Mont Blanc across the table and says, "Wow, nice pen!". Us guys in the know can get that response for under $10;)
.
Thank you, Jamie! I love turning burls b/c you never know what you're going to get. Try the black wax next time. It can really make the figure pop. Not so much in this case, but sometimes.

Nice Al! That's beautiful wood. But is it a bullet? A gun? I'm so confused. ;-)

I don't think I'm giving the wood enough credit, so I posted another pic (below). It looks a little proud at the base but for you superturners out there, I measured against the bearing to a 1/256 with a digital caliper. The hardware's a bit off, so if you use this kit, you might want to measure off your base, not the bushing.

^life don't get no better, Don. I just wish it was a 25.06; I'm in love with that gun right now. I fear I'm going to have to start casting. Not a very popular round. You got one?
