Project Information

I used mineral spirits to show that this stock will look like wtih a finish. It's going to look a lot better with more sanding and a Watco Tung oil (fruit or light walnut color) And then Lin-Speed gunstock oil from Brownells. I'm running out of tiger maple. I guess I'll have to start making calls and hunting some pretty soon.

Very nice!

What tools do you use to make all these intricate shapes and to join parts so tightly?
Do you know any links describing the process?

One of my projects shows the gunstock duplicator I use. And producing the laminated blank is much harder than carving the stock. I built a 80 ton hydraulic press to make sure I get a good glue up. A commercial press big enough to glue up a blank was way too expensive. And no, I don't know anywhere to see links describing the process.
Here's a few photos of my carving setup.

I start with 4/4 rough cut hardwood lumber and the internal laminations are resawn with a Rikon 14" bandsaw, then drum sanded flat. The figgured wood I like to use just chips out on a planner. After carving, I use an air powered orbital sander with 40grit paper to smooth out the router marks, then switch to a finish sander and go to 220 grit for most stocks. (I sell most of my production to gunsmiths who do the final finishing.)

I got into carving gunstocks because I love woodworking and beautiful lumber. Most of the unfinished gunstocks on the market are made from a birch laminate that's made by Ruttland Plywood… My custom stocks are made from Applachian hardwoods, the maple, cherry and walnut I use come from local tree services. All of the wood iI use is wood that has been saved from being chopped up into firewood.

Hal, Stock arrived today. Photos don't do this justice. You also didn't leave me much to do to finish sand on this stock. Hope to glass bed action in here in a day or so. Then, hopefully recoil pad I've order will be here and I'll start on finish sanding and applyin some finish .
