Project Information

Hello all, just tooting my own horn. Pictured is about 3 or four years evolution of my building Lapsteel guitars. For those who don't know, a Lapsteel sounds much like the more common pedal steel, though it is a much simpler instrument to build. It is played with a bar and finger & thumb picks. They were very popular in the 30's and 40's playing Hawaiian music. As showen in the picture lapsteels take various shapes. The red double neck, 6 strings is my latest. Laps are also built with 8 and 10 strings.

Those are some great looking instruments! I pick a little but you guys who can build them and make them sound so good are amazing to me. I never learned to play a steel but I sure do like to have one around with a good picker. Thanks Bob.

You say evolution - did you move from the bar to the guitar look or the other way?

Thanks for the kind comments. They all sound pretty good, but if you want to check out a really good player go to my web site, the links page and watch Rick Alexander.

Marge, the evolution is from right to left, the first one (wine colored) is a 2"x5" with the various parts attached.

Absolutely fantastic! This is a future project for me. I've built cigar box guitars and a Telecaster from a kit, but a lap steel is my ultimate guitar build.
Where did you get the plans or did they come out of your head?
Do you prefer one wood over another?

btw, the link did not work for some reason.
