Project Information

It's no secret I am not a fan of working with live edge material. There is nothing wrong with it and i have a lot of respect for people that do, but it's just not for me. However this wide piece of figured walnut was too nice to cut up. Had I removed the "live" portion it would have been to short.

Because I am also not a fan of simply cross cutting, planing, sanding and finishing a piece of lumber, I decided to add some detail. I cut some of the plan sections out of the walnut and added some spalted birch. In addition I added some intersecting stripes of purpleheart, birch, and padauk. This was sanded to 600 grit, oiled with mineral oil then treated with a special wax mixture my wife makes.

I love the figure on this walnut and it's one of my favorite cutting boards!

Wow, The work of the natural creator beside the work of man. Both beautifull in their own way. Thanks for posting.

Gorgeous use of woods! I really like that you used the woods natural beauty along with some nice accents as opposed to simply relying on one or the other. Bravo. You keeping it? Better question: You using it?

Nice looking board with a little extra character leaving the natural edge .
Especially like the way you did the ribbon ,there is a nice continuous flow on both of them without the usual part missing .

Very nicely done Joe.
I'm with you about live edge. .... just don't get it ….... but that said, the small inclusion here does no harm to the piece and you were right not to lose any of that beautiful walnut.

I like it.

The whole design just works! The intricate strips + the figured walnut + the spalting + the bit of live edge = just perfect!
