Project Information

I decided I wanted a box from each type of wood I sawed the logs for the lumber. This is the last of five. This one is Oklahoma elm. Dimensions:12×7x3 3/4". No glue box joints. Live edges on top and hinge. Shipwright hinge. Finished with Deft SG rattle can lacquer. The last pic shows the whole 'family' of boxes (from left: mesquite, mulberry, elm, Arkansas cherry, and Kansas hedge). The tall one in the center of the mantle is not part of this 'family'.

You sure know how to feature the 'anomolies'. I love the knot/handle and the unsemetrical lower hinge leaf. Well done for the whole set Andy.

Fantastic Andy…! You have really mastered the box joint. Those joints are so tight looking and precise. That piece you used for the top looks like it has been begging to be a box top since it started growing…You must have been talking to the trees. Those great hinges put the icing on the cake.

Nice work Andy - that is a special set. Lucky this is the last one, otherwise you'd need a bigger mantle…..

Thanks for all the kind responses. I have really enjoyed building these as it gives a real sense of satisfaction taking it from a firewood log to the finished piece. Joey, I have tried to quit building boxes until I sell some, but I can't! Oh well, as far as vices go, I guess it beats some of the alternatives. I do have a table finished that I need to post when I can get it outside for pics.

yes Andy. What everyone else said. Who needs metal and hardware. Not you. That's purist. I respect that. I'm getting more into boxes and hope to master those joints and hinges.

That is awesome! From tree to board to project; is there any better feeling satisfaction?

Andy, what a nice use of the knot in the top. You always do such a nice job of spotting the beauty your wood has to offer and then presenting that beauty in a way that is obvious to all. I see you used a natural edge on the hinge too. That seems to be a new wrinkle for you too.

I think Jim was right when he said this is the work of a purist. There is something pure in the process of working from tree to finished box with nothing but wood in the finished product. Beautiful philosophy, beautiful build, beautiful result.

Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Very…. very nice Andy, Ah Oh looks like you are running out of room for your boxes :)

I did a various different searching on that Oklahoma elm and wasn't able to come up with anything is there another name for it? I'd like to get my hands on some if possible.

That's a beautiful box! Elm is a great wood to use in furniture construction… If you can find a flat board…
