Showcase cover image for The Wedge

Project Information

The Wedge is a famous wave in Newport Beach California, It is a wave created from a man-made jetty where when surf comes in the right direction it rebounds off of the jetty and doubles in size. So you end up with cross-facing waves which is what you see in the carving I made from Maple Burl that I also dyed and painted the white foam.

That dye with the burls is the perfect combination to look like swirling water.

I had to look up The Wedge and wow! That is a crazy place to surf.

Wow, that looks fantastic. You captured the wave doubling really well.

It would be even more dramatic with those gnarly jetty rocks on the left and that steep body-slamming shore. Then again, that might detract from the incredible water-like qualities you put in.

I thought about doing that but then thought of how long it would take and said nope.
