Project Information

Well, It seems to be a trend. I've looked at benches for a long time and for the price, size and utility, I'm looking towards a 6' version of John White's New Fangled Bench (Fine Wood Working, 1999).

I'm not sure why, but no one posts the Sketchup drawing files on the net, so I've had to generate some. I'm sure If I offend, you'll let me know. All I ask in return is a thanks for saving time. Although I do recommend creating everything from scratch in sketchup just to make sure you are accurate. My router table base drawing has a LIE in it and I was off by 1/8th of an inch on one of my drawers. DOH.

i have to kindly disagree with your statement. I posted my sketchup, which was a modification of Jeff's sketchup, which I believe was in turn somebody else's original!

That being said, yours is much prettier, since it has colors and stuff :)

One bit of advice-I put another identical stretcher between the back legs, and it took what little side-to-side "movement" there was and eliminated it. It's easy to do since you're already be cutting one, AND you can then build 'fitted' tool totes to store on top (or even put in a real shelf or something).

One other thing-I didn't go to the length of drawing the pipes at actual diameters and with precise locations, and that was a mistake. I tried very hard to do the measurements before drilling, but found myself still a touch off… if you're experience, this may be a non-factor for you, but I wish I'd just measured and done it in the first place.

I'm excited to see your progress, so make sure to post the pics :)

This looks like a nice bench. I really need to add a good bench to my shop.

Thanks for sharing.

Personally speaking, it's hard to go wrong with John White's workbench. The FWW website is revisiting it this month and calls it "The Bench You Love to Love". I built one about 6 months ago. It has worked well for me.
I'm adding some drawers, shelves and other improvements to mine and will be posting them soon on my blog.

this bench predates my awareness of the fine woodworking world. Glad you posted it, that one appeals to me - and the current "benchless" state of my shop.
