Project Information

so you ask what the heck is a dessehamptainment center? well a couple months ago SWMBO comes to me with a request, she wants a desser with upper cabinets with a tv mounted in between.so i add my design idea's and this is what i came up with.so it's a combination desser, laundry hamper and entertainment center.construction is cherry hardwood and 3/4 & 1/4 cherry ply.the main frame work is put together with dominoes and bisquit joinery.all drawers are made from pre finished maple ply with 1/4 melamine bottoms.the small drawer fronts are solid cherry and large drawers and upper doors are rail and style construction with floating panels of 1/4 cherry ply.the uppers have adjustable shelves made from 3/4 melamine.all drawer slides are soft close as are the upper units hinges.the bottom unit is 34" tall and 72" wide, the upper unit is 42" high and each side is 16" wide.the bottom is 20" deep.the finish is 3 coats of my go to maloof blend oil.

here is the attachment of the top just using corner blocks with slotted holes

the handles are kit i got from rockler which allowed me to turn my own handles out of maple burl, the metal is brushed nickel.
.

the laundry hamper is just a big plastic tub frome lowes.

here is the "sketchup" drawings for the build, sorry it's so overly detailed-lol.

So…how long does it take you to plan out and build that? It's amazing. I realize I have very limited cabinet making skills.

not that long andy she told me what she wanted I did my "sketchup" drawing and I started the next weekend.i admire guys that have the patience to do detailed drawings but I cant do it that way, most is just in my head, the drawings are just a reference to the dimensions I want, thanks for the comment.

WOW pottzy, looks like you can do more than just drink and eat chill and cheese. I really like!

Looks bloody good, however you're gonna be in the poo when SWMBO demands a bigger TV… your tolerances leave little potential for expansion. As I age, I've found that a bigger TV is easier than fitting temples to the TV and strengthening my neck.

With rc taking a sabatical, I'll take the liberty to ask/post some posers…
  1. Where's that PC4216 being put to use?
  2. Real Dominos or imposters?
  3. Laundry hamper in the lounge… or do you watch TV in the laundry while doing the washing? OR is it for SWMBO when she wants a quick escape for your smelly sox?
  4. With the 7mm tubes, can you rip the handles off and write with them?
  5. I thought that dressehamptainment was a pottzy in a skirt!
  6. With soft close, you'll never realise SWMBO is annoyed with you when she slams the doors in disgust!

BTW. Should make a couple of pens out of the same timber and toss them in the top middle drawer for general use… always found it a novel touch.

damn duckie i thought i was gonna get some relief with rc out of town but apparently not.ok lets take em one by one.
the pc4216 was not used in this build, came to late but it will make it's grand debut soon!
fake dominos duckie i think not!
as for the hamper,my idea, she had this basket in the corner and the beagle was always stealing stuff-nuff said.
the 7mm tube, the ban of the duck! no you cant.
no skirt,no!
and the soft close, you guessed that right,no more slamming drawers or doors, but trust me ill still know.
wow it's like robs still here.the bitch is when he gets back ill have to go through this all over with new questions.thanks for the comments buddy, stay tuned for part 2 of this swmbo build.

Oh, to have the space, the equipment, and, more to the point, the talent to build furniture.
This is fantastic, Larry. And the burl handles? That's a fine example of the little detail that make a Thing pop.
And, pop it does - right into my Favorites Folder.

Wow, this looks amazing! I love seeing pictures of project while there in progress. I found this blog that has lots of neat Woodwork plan projects similar to yours. They are suppose to be step by step and for beginner but I dont know. I really dont think a beginner could even do these difficult looking projects. This is the website tell me what you think? http://bit.ly/DIY_Woodwork
