Showcase cover image for The Cat Highway

Project Information

This is how ya woo a cat lovin' woman, lol.

We have a four year old Airedale Terrier that has a strong prey drive. We also have a cat that takes no crap, lol, so this makes for near constant high speed chases around the living room.

I took some barn board pieces I had kicking around and made up a bunch of differnet sized platform type shelves that encircle the room. I know this isn't for everybody, but I live on the fringe anyway and figured that I could always remove them again and putty the holes if needed.

This works better than a single cat tree in that the cat is free to move about around the room. Gilly, the terror, ...I mean terrier, gives up almost instantly once the cat is out of reach, lol.

To make things interesting for us (the viewers of "the Show") I added some obstacles to the course, like a rope/plank bridge and a teeter totter. A book case I built fits perfectly in the corner and the cat walks on balance beams (large wood curtain rods) that stretch over the windows.

All in all, it seemed to work out pretty well for everyone.

Me no see cat! No cat, no cat highway! Fraudulent claim of infrastructure improvement. Bob the Builder outraged.

That looks like a pretty good idea. I've seen more involved approaches to the same problem, yours is more interesting. Deploy a couple of digital cameras hooked up to a large capacity drive, and you're bound to catch some comedy gold when the cat misses a jump.

Great idea KelSnake! I can imagine how amusing that is to watch. I have an Airedale terrier as well and know the crazyiness. Gotta love that sleeping position of laying on their backs with legs spread.
