Project Information

There are a few people to whom I owe a debt of gratitude and I thought it would be a nice gesture to build them each a small "thank you" box… This is actually the third one in a series of five…
It was a really "back to the basics" build, the goals this time to "keep it simple" and to try to "get it right"... At the end of the day, I took my time (and it shows)... As ever, it's not perfect, but neither is it's maker
I have to admit, that building a box "my way", has grown increasingly easier to achieve over the years, with the various machines I've acquired! The ideas and processes remain the same, just can be done simpler and faster…
Looking around the shop to start it, I found one of my oldest pieces of saved wood, a not-quite 20" x 3" Red Oak drawer side from an old bureau my Great-Grandmother had…

That drawer side became the box sides…

The top and bottom panels are from my most recent scavenging, a shipping crate from work was made entirely out of quality birch ply… I'll take it! Lol

And lastly, the "Hardware" (hinges and finger pull) were made from a stick of left-over Cherry…

The hinges are a pair of simple, hidden-pin ones with integral lid-stops…

They might seem a little large for the box, but this little guy is heavy for it's size!
Did I mention, that this is a small box??

Thanks for your interest, comments are always welcome and appreciated!
Oh, and Happy Easter :)

I think scavenging wood is one of the most rewarding aspects of doing woodwork, apart from of course the satisfaction of "saving' something from the firewood pile, especially if its a special piece.
Not forgetting of course the reward of achievement from within ones self.

Now below is a list from 1 to 5 of which it will be easy to add the names as as you progress through your return of kindness or debt of gratitude, which appears you may have forgotten to add.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
And next time try not to be too much of a tease and make us guess just who the lucky person is/was and we will try to Patronise you more. ha ha hint hint

You also forgot something else of importance,... your Great Grandmathers phone number please !!

Oh and BTW excellent work !! 2 x thumbs up on the hinges.

I like it. The best little boxes are the ones made from odds and ends. The finger joints and wooden hinges caught my eye.

Mike, I see some great gratitude reaching out of the box you made. There's nothing better than a hand made gift. I'm digging the hinges too.
