Project Information

A friend of mine has been wanting one of my mesquite boxes and he recently brought his tractor over when mine was broken so I saw a chance to repay the favor and made this for him. Mesquite sawed from my last log. Dimensions:7×12x4 1/2". Finish: shellac, wax. Patron hinge of Jatoba. Included the last pic of the underside of the tray made from some really old plywood. I sanded it very lightly to preserve the plywood co. logo, etc. I gave it to him today and he seemed very happy.

Very nicely & tastefully done. I am still working on my box skills. Really like the mesquite. Still hope to go get some this fall.

Lovely work that does justice to the material. Someone else might have tried to work around the "flaws" in the wood; you manage to incorporate them so that every thing is just … better.

Andy…that is one mighty fine box and the Mesquite has a very good looking grain. That is one wood i haven't worked with yet and I need to try it sometime soon.
I know your friend had to be very happy with that box…who wouldn't be?

Thanks for all the kind words. How many noticed that the front looks like 2 pieces joined in the center? This was some of the wildest grain I have had in mesquite. By the way, this wood does not play well with the planer. Thank God for the drum sander or I'd have wrecked this one!

Gotta say that is one spectacular looking piece and very solid. On the hinges you made… is it all wood or is there a metal rod/pin? The addition of the plywood w/ graphics/logo is a nice touch. Gives it that vintage/retro vibe and so much character… as if the wood didnt speak for itself.

I noticed the front panel but didnt think it was joined… I was more interested in how the same piece of wood could take the finish/stain so differently on each side. Was that intentional? I'm guessing not but it's really cool all the same.

Great job man. Very inspiring. What is it with boxes and our endless fascination with such a simple shape?

Thanks for all the comments guys. Sixstring- 1/8" brass brazing rod for the hinge pin but I recess it by 1/8" and plug it with wood so the brass doesn't show. The plug also keeps the hinge pin from migrating. There is no stain and the wood is the same color on both sides but reflects the light differently because of the grain. ie put the sun on the other side and the light/dark areas switch sides! (hope this makes sense) Greg, You need to try some mesquite. Not only is it cool looking but your shop will smell awesome!

Andy,

You certainly have perfected this box form. Very nice work. You have a keen eye for wood and grain, and it shows again in this box.

The great thing about creating with fine wood is that we get to peer into the souls of wonderful trees and be amazed by what we find hidden there. This process never ceases to fascinate me. Your work always shows the wood to its best advantage and brings out its natural beauty. Thanks for sharing that with us.
