Project Information

This box is made from Marblewood and Purpleheart. When I began it, I had plans to take the grinder to it and make it one of my sculpted boxes but as it began to take shape it began to feel like maybe I shouldn't sculpt it. Once I added the Purpleheart plugs it began to feel sorta Aztec to me so I cut the sides to a 7 degree angle. Then I added a slight angle to the lid. Once again, I could not find a lift that worked so I went without. Just a little pressure at the back and it lifts nice and easy. The hard part is finding the back.

Very awesome wood. I do think that it was fine without the carving.

I still plan to use some to sculpt with, I have a feeling it's got some great grain hidden in there, but this box is square and it just didn't "feel" right to sculpt it.

Wow Joey, that is some wild looking wood! I agree that sculpted boxes should be rectangular (don't know why but it just seems right). The purpleheart plugs are interesting additions. Do the pics accurately reflect the color of the marblewood? The only marblewood I've seen was in one of Greg's sculpted boxes. You forgot to post the dimensions and finish (just a friendly reminder). This is a very cool box! Have you ever cut the top splines deeper to act as stops for the lid?

That is a seriously strange looking box, due to the grain, I think. My eyes want to slide around on it. Sculpting that would have been interesting. I have never used that wood. It looks like you had fun with it. Great work.

Fantastic…Another really nice box Joey….I really like the marblewood. I do not see marblewood here often at the lumberyard and I keep looking for it in hopes of buying more.

@Andy, the colors are pretty true to life. Not exact of coarse but close. The size of the box is 7 1/4X7 1/4X3 1/4, and the finish is Polycrylic as always.

@everyone,
Thanks for the kind words. A little about the Marblewood. It is hard and heavy. It does sand up easily using the ROS, but I would imagine if I sculpted it and had a lot of hand sanding to do, it would be a major PITA. Be sure to wear some sort of mask. I forgot it when I threw it on the table saw to cut the angel on the sides and my sinuses burned for hours for some reason. It's not something I forget often, but I paid for it this time.

Thanks again everyone.

Nice box Joey. I think that was a good decision because sculpting could not add to that beautiful grain pattern.

Thanks Jim. I think with the shape of the box, not sculpting was the correct choice, but in a different box, I think it could really make the grain sweep across the box. Greg did an excellent job with it in one of his boxes.

It would be a lot easier if there was a like button for comments. Since there isn't I want to say thanks to everyone who commented on my box. Stay tuned, more are on the way.
