A colleague had seen some of my work and asked if I could help with her husband's taxidermy display of some ducks he took on St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea. While the taxidermist took care of the ducks nicely, he's no woodworker. The wood base had a lackluster finish, exposed nail heads, and gapped miters, so refinishing wasn't a great option, in my view. I suggested that the base could be fully enclosed in a stand of some sort and gave them a couple of open table-like options and since they were wine drinkers, a wine rack version to make it multi-functional.
They picked it up a couple of weekends ago and based on the photos they posted, it looks right at home. Not shown, is the glass cover…since it wouldn't photograph well. The trim shown in the second photo below is removable, to allow the base to drop in. The glass cover then fits within the trim.
