Project Information

I am headed off to the Great Lakes Woodworking Festival in Adrian, Mi tomorrow, and I realized (several weeks ago) that I didn't have a proper way to transport my tools. So I ended up making a pair of tool chests. The one on the left is a small Dutch tool chest via Chris Schwarz ( http://www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/chris-schwarz-blog/details-on-the-dutch-tool-chests ), and the one on the right is a Japanese style tool chest via Toshio Odate and Wilbur Pan ( http://giantcypress.net/post/44613074898/tool-box-after-odate ). I got the idea for using the lid of the Japanese chest as a way to hang the saw from mafe ( http://lumberjocks.com/mafe/blog/30446 )

Both are made of primarily eastern white pine, and are screwed together except for the bottom of the Dutch chest is dovetailed. The Dutch chest is finished in milk paint and linseed oil, and the Japanese chest is unfinished as they traditionally are.

Now it is time to take them on the road…

Well done. Give some thought to storage on the lid as well. I have two panel saws and marking/measuring stuff stored there.

Very nice I just finished a Japanese toolbox and hope to start my Dutch box in a couple of weeks. Few things left on the honeydew list and a paying job first.

Those two boxes are a great way to protect your tools on any trip that you need to carry your tools with along you and they will also provide any needed organization as well. Congratulations and welcome to Lumberjocks.

Excellent job. It will be interesting to see which one you prefer after a while.
Was one more fun to build than the other?
I'm working through a series of Japanese tool boxes as well right now, it's fun to see the differences.

Thanks everyone. Both chests performed admirably today, and did provide a good bit of organization that I needed.

As far as which one was more fun to build, that is a tough call. They both had their challenges, and trouble spots. I would have to say I am a little more proud of the Dutch one, but that might be because I haven't finished tricking out the Japanese one yet. :)
