Showcase cover image for Swings and Gliders

Project Information

Some time ago I visited the home of a retired man who made swings in his garage from old White Oak pallets. They were well constructed but a little crude. Sales of these swings was good from all indications. This got me thinking about swings and how they are constructed. I had never built a swing. I looked at some online plans and referenced a couple of books and developed my own pattern.

Last year I built two of low grade Red Oak and painted them with enamel paint to be used for our annual Dove shoot that fall. A year later they are doing fine needing only a little freshening and cleaning of the paint. They are long and seat 4 but the design can be made to any length. Because of the length I added bottom and back bracing for added rigidity. I hope they will hold up for several years. They have gained some notoriety and are preferred seating for the ladies who come to watch or hunt.

This year I repaired my back porch and replaced the bench with a glider fashioned from the same bench design. It has added a lot of interest to that part of the landscape.

I love the Gliders.
My grandparents had one on their porch in Texas.
Thanks for sharing.

I could not get the pictures to straighten up by any of the usual methods. Don't know why.
