Project Information

A Buddhist structure for meditation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stupa

This one is inspired by the 9th century Borobudur temple in Indonesia.

I'm fascinated by shapes, this one got stuck in my head years ago.

243 separate pieces. Segmented rings of 48,32,24,16, and 12 pieces, 6 piece finial base and 1 piece finial.

The stones in the stupas I saw ranged from almost black to almost white, some looked blue, brown and red.

I used wood jaws for most of the holding, and joining rings together.

7" wide at base x 7" tall. Oak, hickory, cherry, mahogany and walnut. Mohawk Dead Flat Lacquer spray.

Wow, Hairy, that is quite a work of art you´ve done. Am I wrong in assuming the glue-ups were just a tad hectic?

Thanks!!

Brian, not at all, it went well. What was hectic was cutting out a ring, right out of the middle and replacing it. I didn't like how it looked.

That really fooled me. I was thinking "I bet that thing is heavy" until I saw the last pic. 243 pieces in that small project! You certainly have some serious patience to keep track of so many tiny pieces. You even carved a design on the 3rd ring. Great job and congrats on your DT3

Nice work!

Building a stupa is considered extremely beneficial, leaving very positive karmic imprints in the mind. Future benefits from this action result in fortunate rebirths. Fortunate worldly benefits will be the result, such as being born into a rich family, having a beautiful body, a nice voice, being attractive, bringing joy to others, and having a long and happy life in which one's wishes are quickly fulfilled. On the absolute level, one will also be able quickly to reach enlightenment, the goal of Buddhism.
So you go that goin' for you, which is nice.

Really cool inspiration, hairy. That is a lot of little pieces. I would be afraid to cut those with my tablesaw and sleds. Do you have a good TS setup, or do you use a bandsaw and true them up on a sander jig?

Thanks! I used wedgie sled and wedges to cut the pieces. http://segeasy.com/

Here's a video of making the sled.
