Showcase cover image for Student Project: Computer Workstation

Project Information

One of my students, who has been instrumental in assembly and figuring out our Shopbot CNC router has been coming in early every morning to "make stuff." One of his creations is this table to hold the computer that we use to run the Shopbot. We went with a three legged version because our floor isn't very flat. We also wanted to stay away from the basic box shapes. My involvement was pretty limited, mostly just helping with feasibility. He is only a sophomore, has pretty good AutoCAD skills, but no CNC experience prior to this year. I look forward to seeing creations that he can come up with in the next couple years. He has been instrumental in helping others with projects and getting others fired up about CNC

I like the "out of the box" design!
Keep an eye on this student as it looks like he has a lot of designer potential!

You must have a decent dust collection system as it is being used in a class room and the PC is not filtered!

That is WAY COOL. Don't be surprised if ShopBot comes along and wants to use it.

That is awesome! I Love having those kids around who are self motivated and come in during homeroom, study hall, english, biology, etc…. the reason I teach!

I'm looking to try and get a CNC machine soon- would you recommend ShopBot? I was looking at Rockler's "Shark" but I don't know if it is any good.

Thanks for all the nice compliments. It really makes teaching fun when students are self motivated. Yes I would recommend the Shopbot. Good machine, fairly easy to use software, good support. We have the 48" x 96" table which I would recommend over any machine with a smaller table. While we don't cut alot of real huge parts it's pretty nice to be able to throw an entire sheet of MDF on the table and cut parts out without having to wrestle with table saw ect.

Great project, I would like to have a shop bot for my lab at school. I have to wait since they bought me a high end 3d printer this year. The dimension printer is also an awesome machine. I like the idea of design it then make it concept of both the shop bot and 3d printer. The students really get fired up about them.

It's good to hear anything about the younger generation getting fired up about woodworking. Keep up the good work.
