Project Information

After seeing a similar project turned at my woodturning club I tried to remember everything I saw.
Trial & error and the wood biting me a few times, I finally got it to behave and this is the result.

It was a slow and patient turn with several trips into te garden to swear and calm down. Glad I saw it through though.

It confuses non wood turners how you get 2 straight edges and 2 rounded on one project. I just smile, nice to keep some secrets in the guild!

Turned from maple and finished with cellulose sealer and carnuba.

Beautiful turning. I'm particularly impressed with the thinness of the top rim. That takes skill, great work.

Thanks Oldtool.
There were more than several moments when I thought I'd gone too far but ended up with 1.5mm on the wings. Never have I stopped to check so many times!

Nice job.
I have made similar turnings with the wings long enough to support the center bowl off the table and also some "square" turnings with 4 legs. I find that most people just assume you cut the sides off a round turning to make a rectangular or square design and they don't understand the difficulty of what you did. So maybe we should just do it "their" way. It would be easier on the fingers….LOL

I love the natural no blood finish you gave this piece!!! It is fun to turn this style but I think its the death factor that makes me do it.
How tall is your bowl?

Thanks for showing!!!

Hi Thewoodman2000, fortunately no blood but caught my knuckles a couple of times from not keeping a proper eye on the ghost image on the wings as I was undercutting.
The bowl is just over 2" and the wingspan is 6".

Glad you liked it.
