Project Information

Here is a step stool I made for my son. I found a picture of a similar one online and said to myself "I can make that!"

It is made from Quarter Sawn White Oak. The finish is a wipe on poly gel that I purchased from Rockler. I made a template for the sides and used my router to cut the matching pieces. I did not yet have a good dado set so I had to use my router to made the grooves to support the step. I reinforced the joint with countersunk screws and titebond III glue. Then I cut tapered plugs from the leftover scrap. It is really solid, and I really like the finish. I also helped my father in-law build one for my nephew.

You have made a very nice step stool. It looks neat and sturdy. I feel like copying it. Is there a support at the bottom of the step?

I was under the gun to finish the stool. So there is not a crosspiece under the step. It is still very sturdy, But I would definitely add one to the next one I build.

Say GForce, what are the dimensions of this very handsome piece? I'm in the market to make one for the shop and one for the house.

The sides stand 19" tall and 16" wide. I sized the step to fit in my bathroom, about 17" wide. The hand holes are about 4" in diameter the top is 6" in diameter from the same center point as the cutout. The top of the step is at about 11" off the floor. My wife complains that I let the step overhang the sides. She wishes that I would have cut the step flush to the sides. I like it the way it is. Let me know if you make one so I can see your interpretation.

Thanks!
