Project Information

I decided to move golf to the back-burner and pick up a new hobby that I could sneak out into the garage and work on in short bursts (a 4-5 hour round of golf is harder to get approval for from the boss than a 1 hour block of time in the shop). As a software engineer I was missing the idea of building something that can be seen, touched, and enjoyed as well. So I decided to get into woodworking and began my journey in March 2012.

This step stool was from a plan on ana-white.com. I only had a circular saw and a jig saw at the time, so it's all butt-joints and wood screws.

I'm a little embarrassed by the execution of the project, but I think there's some value in seeing a progression as I (hopefully) develop and improve my skills. I'm sure I'll look back some day and smile, and groan at my first wood working project. I use this stool in my shop for my two year old son to stand on when he want's to see what's going on.

Looks good enough to me. But, you aren't going to change much about that feeling. Even when you've been doing it for a while, you'll still feel like you could have done better. That's part of the fun…continual learning and improving

I'm fairly new to wood working as well. The thing that sucks is it seems like you need a new tool for every project! Nice work.

Great starter project "JSTN" this has been one of the projects I have been meaning to do soon just have yet to really get any kind of nice dark wood to go with all this light stuff I have.

(I heard that "Dick" the list seems to be getting longer instead of shorter.)

JSTN, Welcome aboard. A really useful first project, I have made a number of stools for my daughter over the past few years and she loves them.
Look forward to seeing future projects.

Well, you are already doin the right thing by introducing your son to this fun hobby. Nuttin wrong with this step-stool at all….. well, maybe the color… lol Not really, cuz you can see it good. I could actually use somethin like this in my shop to be able to get up into my upper cabinets. One o these days, it's on that never-ending "ta-do" lists.
