Project Information

This was my second project ever!

I think it turned out great and I love it. The dimmer switch works great and is crucial for a lamp with a bare bulb.

-Valve Activated Dimmer Switch
-Red Oak

Made with:
Skill saw
Power drill

What I learned.
1. Buy ALL components before beginning the build
2. Check the angle of the saw blade manually. The tools gauge may be wrong.

A big Welcome to LJ's. A great bunch of folks from all over the World are here to share. I'd say you are doing just great with only a few tools. Just wait till you have a shop full.

You mitered all of those joints with a skill saw? That is some skill. Nice job!

Thanks for the comments!

I'm a power engineer by trade, so the electrical stuff wasn't much of a problem. I had to watch some videos to try to figure out how to do the woodworking though. Like:

How to make a straight cut with a circular saw
Making an On/Off actuator from a valve

I connected my valve to a dimmer switch instead of an ON/OFF switch.

I trusted the angle gauge on my saw to be a true 45 degrees, but it wasn't. This turned out to be a HUGE mistake and Ihad to do A LOT of sanding to true it up.

The stain is called 'Puritan Pine'. I added 2 coats of oil based polyurethane.
