Project Information

Cut these handles using Lee Valley Tools free template out of hard sugar maple. To get the XL size I made my cut line 1/32" outside the line and used 1,1/16" thickness stock. Routed the excess in four gentle steps with a 1/2" carbide roundover bit.

Maple is difficult to stain dark, using fellow LJ's advice I used RIT liquid dye in the following way: 9 capfulls of dark brown mixed with 2 capfulls of cherry red in 1 quart of very hot water. (I used my wifes electric serving buffet to get the mixture hot) submerge the handle for about 4 mins, untill the colour is just right. Dry over the register in the house for a day.

Seven to ten coats of teak oil with a very light sanding between the fourth and 5th coats gets the job done.

Very cool. I've been meaning to do this for a few of my planes. Love the dye job.

Did you do the front knobs as well? I am planning on making some new sets for my planes as well and had not thought of increasing the size of the totes to accommodate my clumsy oversized hands. I like how the dye came out on them as well.

DaveG,
I am going to sell four No 5 Bailey planes. I use eBay quick and easy.
Tym,
I do not have a lathe so no, they will have to wait.
And thank you all for the kind comments.

Wow, those turned out great! I have made some out of 5/4 maple in the past, but never attempted to get the handle to look like the original rosewood. I am impressed!

Awesome, I was checking LJ for ideas using RIT, and bam, here's your project. Looks great, and thanks for the info on the dye.
