Project Information

These three gates were made to function as barriers for a small child and pets. The wood is ash which I chose to colour and match to the floor and banisters.

I relied heavily on my love for art deco design to create a look that was unique but didn't stand out inside the house, instead, the design is subtle and modest yet elegant. I took efforts to inlay the splines connecting the rails and stiles because it is one of my favourite design elements from the arts and crafts era. It's very satisfying making them.

The finish is smooth to the touch with coats of Tung oil.

Wow! Those are really elegant looking and great craftmanship. Wish I had your inspiration for these last year when I needed to build one. Thanks for the share.

Very nice work, looks like you did a good job scribing that mount to the wall, too. Mind if I ask where you picked up that hinge? I have to make a baby gate soon, too.

The hinges are brass piano hinges I cut to length. The scribe was a challenge, I used MDF first to make a template then did the mounts in the shop. I used a poly glue as well as screws to attach them.

Awesome! Very nice stair gates on my favorites now.

I really like them and probably will copy your design to keep my 6 months old son away from stairs danger.

Could you please share some construction details? wood thickness, hinges etc.

the frame is 3/4 thick and the panels are 1/2. Normal frame and panel construction although I added some dominos in the dado holding the frames. I made full 1/2 panels and routed the design using a circle as my marker. The hinge is a piano hinge cut to size.
