Project Information

I had a client that liked my bar stools, but wanted a square base she saw in a picture and also wanted them upholstered.

Using the photo I was able to build the base.

Upholstering the seat would be easy, I would just build a plate for the backrest to go into like usual and then add a slip seat cushion. The tricky part was adding upholstery to the backrest without screws going through the back.

To do this I approached it like a boat seat that has a cushion that is buttoned on and can be removed. I steam bent some blanks to use for the cushioning.

For the seat plate I used 3/4" plywood and added some threaded inserts so they could be screwed on form under the seat.

I like the square bases, they seemed a lot easier than my round style. I have done them a few times before and they go together really quickly.
Once they were all upholstered it was time to build a crate again and get them on the way. I can't tell you how many jobs I have had now where I never have met the client, very few have I even spoken to. Works out well, some may say I am not really a good people person. ;)

Thanks for taking a look.

Glad to see the developers haven't taken over the coast like they did in the east. Nice stools. Ed

Really nice stools. I like the look of the square base to the round one, but both are very nice. What type of finish do you use on them?

I liked the square bases, Brian. The seat cushion looks very plush and comfortable. It also makes the back rest appear too low. Not sure I understand about how the back cushion is secured. Can you explain further, please. Thanks for sharing.

On the upholstered back I steam bent a plate to hold the cushion and attached it with snaps like you would have on a coat.

One part was screwed to the plate and the other was put in a recess in the back so the two parts would mate flush.
Thanks for all the comments. The finish I use is a homemade wipe on varnish(4 coats) followed up by a homemade oil wax mix.
