Project Information

This is my first try at a spiral any thing. These are walnut and about 10in tall. The base is 3/4×3 3/4". They are not perfect but it was a lesson in turnning. The table slopes on that end so it may look like they are not the same hight. It was alot of work but fun. I did some things out of order. Like turnning the side on the base on the first one first. I learned do the top and bottom then the side it is a lot easier. Above all pay close attention to your lay out. I didn't divide one time on the second one. There fore the twist was not as tight as the first. So now I have half of another set. Thats why the one has sap wood in it. I will take these up to the Main Street Gallery where iI show some stuff. They are having their 1st anniversary and showing. I took the bowls down yesterday. I also have some scrimshawed powder horns in the gallery as well. If I can get the plug in the one I have been working on all winter I'll take it to. I may post some horns later. Any way take alook thanks.

I'm glad to see a set with a symmetric twist. Nothing is more disturbing to the eye as when the spirals all twist in the same direction. Thumbs up on your attention to this important detail!

Hi Gar: are you familiar with Bill Bowen's book on spirals & twists? If not, you might want to get a copy, as it might help your layouts, and help give you ideas. pretty good for a first. (My own personal opinion(and it's worth what you are paying for it) is that your bases could use a tad of an artistic upgrade..not look like discs, but a base that looks not so much like an afterthought) But again, for a first they look pretty good.Good luck with your stuff at the gallery

Hi Gar,
I'm impressed, never tryed the lathe, so I have something in front of me.
To make a spiral, I have no idea even where I should start.
Did you just learn by doing?
I bought a luttle metal lathe last year, but have not had the energy to get started on some toolmaking dreams…
Nice job.
