Project Information

I made this for my daughters 19th birthday, a passive amplifier for her Samsung Galaxy 5 smartphone.
The speaker cone is circassian walnut, the body is a block of mystery wood I had laying around.
The finish is mineral oil. It was so cold in my shop that I was afraid nothing would dry.
The phone pictured is not the one it was made for so it doesn't fit quite right.
This thing works really well, I am surprised at how much better the phone sounds using it.

Very nice work and a gift much appreciated I am sure. I like the wood combos and over all design. Is there any real technical design features to follow or just common sense construction ? Thanks for sharing…....Rob

If you look up horn loaded speaker design you'll find lots of very detailed info. It's basically the modern day version of the horn on a gramophone. A cell phone speaker certainly isn't designed for horn loading (higher pressures than open air drivers, I believe), but it can certainly gain something from it and that would be the direction you would look for a technical understanding. The basic gist is that you provide a relatively smooth transition from the hard material of the speaker cone to the soft atmospheric air by having a gradually expanding cross section in the horn. This makes the transfer of energy more efficient.

Nice looking speaker especially the turned horn. That's what's missing from many of these things, woodturning.

BTW, anyone interested in what altendky was saying about horns should watch this video.
