Spalted Maple Bowl

This bowl was turned from a spalted maple log I got from some family friends, who had cut the tree down in their yard. It's around 6.5" in diameter, and 2" tall. I finished it with Mahoney's Walnut Oil.

Overall I like the shape of this bowl. I like the way it curves back in subtly, and the overal form. The bowl sides start out a little thicker at the bottom and narrow towards to top, to offer a lightness in visual appearance, but good feel when picked up.

"Magic" :D

Actually there's a button for it, you just have to create a gallery/album first. I find the gallery page pretty annoying defaulting to the image view instead of album view, but that's neither here nor there.

The 3-dot menu next to your avatar in the top right (from desktop, anyway)

Then add media, and create personal album.

After that, when creating your project (or any post, it seems) you can use "gallery embed", which is the camera icon next to the image on the message editor, then select the "your albums" tab (or presumably whatever individual images you want under your media? I haven't tried that yet; EDIT to add, no, selecting individual images does not create a gallery, just a bunch of images from the gallery, without the carousel thing)
Sensitive content, not recommended for those under 18
Show Content

And then after selecting your images/album, click continue, and it should insert something like this in to your project post:
[GALLERY=album, 6][/GALLERY]

Thanks! I've only used... I think 3 of my chunks, and a good few left that will need to find the same. Two live edge, and this one so far

Search is better? :D Actually, the marketplace classified listings are nice, and I kind of hope they can figure out a way to use that mechanism for posting projects. If you haven't yet, give that a peek, it has a nice feature for uploading a bunch of images that seems to automatically create and embed the gallery like I just did above, without adding the media to an album, and all that. And the advanced search gives you a tile view of the showcase/projects, so hopefully they can figure out how to get that to work on other pages.

We have some pieces of "better" around, they just gotta figure out how to get them consistent everywhere.

And I really hope they can figure out a way to re-migrate bookmarked projects/showcase items, if nothing else to let people recover them and make browser bookmarks. I can't really find any sort of silver lining to that one lol

Nice, Mos! I’ve got a bunch of spalted elm that wants to be bowls, but I’m planning to stabilize it first so my ham-handed turning techniques won’t a-splode it halfway through the turning.

Beautiful turning Mos, it does have a nice simple shape to it and a wonderful grain. Well Done.

Thanks for the info on the gallery, I plan on sitting inside this weekend and doing some experimenting. Going to be a really wet 2-3 days here.

Nice bowl Mos.

I don't think it's actually the "explosion's" I fear the "impacts" the shrapnel make. I quit turning due to them. Knocked out twice, with a face shield, and helmet in place. First time I said shame on you, second time was shame on me. I ever turn again, it will be pens. :p

That’s a great bowl with a pleasing shape and interesting grain.

I like your presentation with the gallery photos at the top. Have you considered adding a post to the Help forum describing the procedure? I’m sure other members would adapt that presentation if they knew about it. When I get a chance, I’ll start converting my projects. I wish the forum conversion had done it automatically, because it’s the closest thing I’ve seen to the way projects used to appear.

Yeah, I have the comment in this thread, and at some point I plan to formalize it and put it as a help thread somewhere. I sort of already volunteered to do that, apparently, though my ideal scenario would be for them to port over the marketplace functionality, which automatically inserts a gallery with the uploaded images. This one you've got to create an album first, then embed that, but agreed, presents better that way. There's been a lot of things I've not been too thrilled about with the conversion, and have been trying to help drive improvement as I'm able, and allowed lol

I haven’t done anything with the marketplace, so I didn’t realize it automatically supported that presentation form. It seems like it should be the default format for project and review posts—anything focusing on a single item, where it’s natural to have a set of photos featured at the top. I appreciate your efforts, whether your suggestions are implemented or not. Thanks!

I'd like to thank you one last time. I've converted a handful of my recent projects to use the embedded photo library at the top, and now they look like they were written by someone with half a clue about how to present a project. (For example, one of my projects is a planter box. Before, the first photo the reader saw was one of my table saw's bevel gauge. They had to scroll all the way to the bottom to see the photos of the finished project. It was embarrassing.)

I did notice one thing I wanted to ask about. Do you know if there's a way to control the order of photos in a library? For my projects, I have the photos named alphabetically in the order I want them shown. If I just dropped a group into the library, they displayed in reverse order. The only workaround I found was to add photos one-at-a-time to the library, starting with the one I wanted to appear last.

You're welcome, and glad it worked out, they really do look better.

So far I've had the same issue with the two I've done, but haven't experimented much beyond that. I ended up deleting one and reuploading to avoid it, annoyingly. I'd be curious to see what the default sorting is... Timestamp descending maybe? Ascending vs descending, easy thing to get wrong in code for some reason lol
