Project Information

This is a hollow vessel that was another of the 4 pieces I filled with Minwax pre stain conditioner. It helped a little bit with the end grain, but it is still punky in a few spots. It is made from spalted beech and finished with EEE and Shellawax.

I added some pics of the boring of it with the Jamieson boring bar with the laser. You just set the laser dot as far away from the cutter tip that you want for wall thickness and bore until the light drops off the piece- then you have the correct wall thickness. Lyle Jamieson is the guy that got me hooked on turning. When I took that one and only seminar, he let us copy his boring bar and sharpening set up so we made drawings right there at the seminar and went home and built them. I don't use it much, but when I'm cutting inside a piece, I can't do without it.

Jim that is a beautiful piece. An absolute credit to you.
Same as what Monty said - it reminds me of an ornate globe. Well done.

Wow…you took a beautiful piece of wood and made it even better. The shape of this really works well with the spalted grain of the wood. Thanks for sharing!

Jim, This piece is Outstanding with beautiful color. The shape is very pleasing too, right along with the finish everything makes this piece beautiful!!

I have considered buying one of Lyle Jamieson boring systems, a friend of mine has one and loves it. But you built yours! How fun is this!!!

Fantastic looking hollow vessel! But, I like your boring system even more. Making your own tools raises the fun of woodworking to another level.

That's a real beauty Jim. Another awesome piece! I remember seeing wood like this when was a boy digging through the wood pile before a camping trip. I knew enough to know it made lousy fire wood. I never would have imagined that someone could make a beautiful bowl from that junk wood.
