Project Information

This is my version of a fish themed cooling rack.
http://www.popularwoodworking.com/articleindex/i-can-do-that-fish-sticks

I do like the simplicity of the Popular Woodworking design but I decided to spice it up a little.

It sets completely flat, the horizontal rails are flush with the bottom, they fit into dado joints.

It can be turned over and hot pans can set on the bottom to keep the face fresh looking.

The head and tail are paduak and the ribs are maple.

The eye is a maple plug re-bored and plugged with wenge.

The finish is wipe on poly by Minwax.
It is about 16'' long x 9'' high and 3/4'' thick.

I do have several other versions in the works.

This was a gift to our very good friends Matt and Alison who are celebrating their anniversary.

Very nice. If you don't mind me asking where did you find the plans. I looked on Popular Woodworking and did not see.

Thanks for the kind words.
@Joe- I had no plans, just drew it out onto a piece of ply and overlaid it onto the wood and cut the shape on the bandsaw.
I used 1/2" ply for spacing the slats. I cut a dado in the bottom and inserted the rails.I know I should do a simple tutorial but time is scarce these days

Great looking fish trivet. I like the choice of woods and the special eye treatment you gave it

Beautiful job. Your friends should enjoy it for a long time.

Sorry I'm late to the party (again). This is such a cool idea with so many versions already running through my thick skull. The wood combo is one of my favorites and a clever design. Well done my friend, as always!

Joe,

I think the original design which inspired this brilliant variation is the FishSticks Trivet

LJ BigFish095008 seems to like the original design, he says he's made 45 of them...

Very nice! I'd like to expand on the idea and make a shower mat, possibly of teak. It would be unique in my beach themed bathroom.
